Sentimental Cameo Locket Brooch
Details
Antique conch shell cameo set in a black jet bezel in a heavy 14kt gold mount. The figure is Bacchante, priestess of and follower of Bacchus, god of wine. She is carved in high relief and wears grapes and leaves cascading down her hair. Around her neck lies a solid necklace, dotted with what may stand for jewels. Pinkish-white conch shell cameo is carved in high relief, grapes & leaves cascading down her hair. Carving is crisp and clean and there is no damage. On the back of this cameo is an oval momento compartment. There to hold a lock of hair or some remembrance of a loved one, either as mourning if the loved on had died, or as a sentimental piece if the loved one is still alive. It looks as though at some time the old C-clasp was replaced causing some small shallow flakes to the jet. The brooch is about 21grams, and by no means flimsy. Measures 1 3/4" x 1 3/8" x over 1/2" thick. Wonderful antique piece in excellent condition.
