$225.00Price
  • Details

19th century paperweight in heavy crystal, with a sulfide profile portrait of Napoleon 1st. The sulfide is signed along the bottom edge ~ Andrieu. Possibly Bertrand Andrieu (1761-1822), French engraver of medals, considered the Restorer of the Art after the time of Louis XIV. The condition of the paperweight is very good. Bottom diameter of 1 3/4"; stands about 1 1/4" high.  A heavy piece, it is in clean and beautiful condtion.

The laurel wreath encircling Napoleon's head was the Greek symbol of military triumph, emulated by the Roman Empire, incorporating the laurel wreath into its own culture.
