Found in the Devon area of England, this is a Georgian drinking glass with roundel decoration. The glass's bowl is small capacity meant to hold only a dram of whiskey. These glasses were used in taverns and private homes for toasting. Made c1770-1815. When the toast was complete and the whiskey consumed, the men slammed their glasses onto the table, making a sound like rifle shots fired . Thus the name Firing Glass. A thick foot on the stem avoided breakages. Highly desirable and collectible, not only for their beauty and historic presence, but also for the fact that so few are left. They have led a rough life, all of them. 4 1/4" tall with a bottom diameter of 2 1/4". Historic glassware for your country toasts.
