A highly unusual, distinctive necklace of gold fill and gilt metals, carved coral, lava and conch shell.  The antique lava cameo fob / pendant is gracefully carved as a clenched hand. The hand grasps a ring which holds a coral hammer, a lava hammer and a conch shell cross, all Victorian symbols of tenets held dear. The cross symbolizes faith and Christianity, the hammer symbolizes honor.  A gilt metal coiled snake wraps around the wrist of the hand.  The snake symbolizes eternity.  Symbols help us express ourselves universally, and are the ties that bind us with one another.  Symbols not only unite, but many believe them to protect us as well.

Our bold, handsome fob is attached to a gold filled book chain.  It is unlikely that they started out life together, but have been together for a long time.  In very good condition with slight excellent, wear and age patterns, the kind that add to the patina and that you want to see in truly early jewelry.  A very few tiny nicks to lava here & there, a trace of gilding loss to the fittings, a bit of attic dust and that is the worst of it.  The necklace bookchain is about 22" long not counting the fob pendant. The pendant is about 2 1/2" long counting the attachment ring.  What a magnificent statement this necklace makes!  Free USA Shipping
