This magnificent cameo depicts an angel reading the Book of Life. Throughout history, and in America especially during the Civil War period, jewelry symbolizing the transitory nature of life was sought after. The subject is an angel holding the Book of Life, which was God's roster of names of all those people considered virtuous and moral. Even the tears of men are recorded in this book. An unusual motif in cameos, this is a highly desirable find. Carved with sensitivity and skill, the large cameo is set in gilt metal. It has its original safety chain and pin. The clasp at back is original and in fine working order. 2 3/8" X 1 3/4" and in outstanding condition.
