An Art Deco, solid 9kt bar pin made in England. Its focal point is a hand carved, cabochon-cut Essex crystal, reverse painted with a portrait miniature of a handsome horse head. The portrait is backed by a disk of luminous mother of pearl, while the entire crystal is backed with 9kt gold. Marked for Birmingham and for the Birmingham jewelry maker L A S. There are two other hallmarks which are worn and I can't read them, even with a 60X jeweler's loupe.
Being gold, hand done, fully marked and of an equestrian theme, this piece is highly desirable and collectible. All original; in exceptionally fine condition. The enamel has mellowed mildly, bringing the horse's color to an elegant silver. Dating to c1920-30, it is marked for 375 (9kt gold). It also is marked for Birmingham and for the maker L A S. There are two other hallmarks which are worn and I can't read them, even with a 60X jeweler's loupe.
