This exciting little dress is rare as the teeth of a hen.  Hand made about 100 years ago, it is hand embroidered in silk floss and just as adorable as can be.  What we love most about this dress is its subtle patriotic display, done with taste and dignity.  The red, white and blue color scheme borders on the pastel, the white being more of a cream and the red and blue being on the lighter side, without being faded. The dress was made at home and designed to show the allegiance between the USA and France during the first world war.  It was most likely made to be worn in a ceremony or patriotic living tableau.

Made of soft wool flannel, the dress is embroidered on one sleeve with a meticulously done American flag, the tiny stars being tiny French knots; the other sleeve has a French flag.  The yoke is smocked and embroidered, as are the collar, the cuffs and the self-belt.  A distinctive touch ~ the hemline can be buttoned with 4 mother of pearl buttons, for a balloon-ish effect.  Three mother of pearl buttons on each cuff are held with thread loops. On loop is broken.  Back button closure also has three mother of pearl buttons.  The dress is unlined.

Chest 16 1/2"; waist 20; belt 27"L; shoulder to shoulder 9 1/2"; armholes about 20" each; hips: full; length 21 3/4".  In very, very fine condition with a few of the most mild signs of age and wear, such as scattered tiny pindot spots, broken thread loop on one cuff, broken thread loop to back of belt.  What a delight to own this, whether for wear or display.
