An original, majestic Ayres rocking horse. Known as the Rolls Royce of rocking horses, the Ayres is widely regarded as the finest of Victorian and Edwardian moving horse toys. Our horse is on a swing stand, or glider. She is a lady's horse with a side saddle. The knee roll is leather and is movable from side to side. There are leather flaps on both sides of the saddle to cover the knee roll's hole when the knee roll is moved to the other side of the horse. The saddle blanket is silk, as are the charming rosettes on the horse's head. Her mane and tail are horsehair and they are complete and securely intact. She is covered in hide, also in lovely condition. There is a transfer decal found on the stand base consisting of a Union Jack flag, with the words British Mfg., and the words Registered Trademark. The maker, Frederick Henry Ayres, combined flair for innovation with high quality. His business and factory were located at 111 Aldegate, London. From 1864, the firm built a reputation for its excellent quality sporting goods and boards games, as well as its rocking horses. Some of the most beautiful and elegant English wooden horses to be found were made by this firm until 1914. Exceptional craftsmanship in the carving gave the Ayres horses a great feeling of reality and spirit. Well-respected in the UK, Europe and America, you can see an Ayres horse (much like our Louise) in the premiere episode of BBC's Masterpiece Classics Indian Summers.
