A sentimental lace pin with a glazed locket encasing a lock of plaited hair from a loved one. Not necessarily mourning pieces, hair pieces were more often sentimental, with locks of hair from parents, children, spouses, betrothed ones and best friends. In the days before photography was available to most people, hair was the most permanent of keepsakes.
The decorative gold border is worked in ribbed fluting embellished with cross-hatching. The brooch has a secure clasp & pin, original. 11/16" X 1/2" Shown with a pretty piece of 19th century Mechlin lace (not included). Originally $198, currently $145.
