A handsome, early kitchen wood box, with its permanent extended back as was the practice. The care for design and craftsmanship with which this box was made places it above and beyond the usual. These were mundane, utilitarian necessities, made when needed and made as economically (for both money and time) as possible. When worn out, they were torn apart for firewood. This box was designed and made with aesthetics in mind. We especially love the vivacious arches carved in the skirt. The box has aged gracefully, with edges worn down from generations of use. Its alligatored surface is original. Sturdy - functional - just gorgeous. New England, mid-1800s. 20" wide, 12 1/4" deep, 24 1/2" high at back.
